The Habitat Patch program seeks to encourage community members to turn their yards into natural habitats for birds and other wildlife. Participation is easy, fun, and helps support local conservation efforts!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Once I enroll in the program, do I have to renew my membership every year? No. The application payment is a one-time fee. Once you are enrolled and receive your yard sign, you are an official Habitat Patch Program participant and can enjoy the program benefits year after year!

  • Are properties anywhere in Southwest Idaho eligible to join the program? At this time, GEAS only has capacity to accept properties that are within a 20 mile radius of downtown Boise. Below is a map of our service area:
  • Can I participate if I don't have a yard?
Yes! If you do not have a yard to work with, you can use your patio, balcony, or a community space around your home, school, or place of business, such as a school or community garden, etc.

  • What is the process of having my property evaluated after I apply?
Once you submit your application and pay your fee, GEAS staff will follow up with you within 2-3 weeks to schedule a site visit. Because of COVID-19, we are offering the following options for the site visit:

    • Property owner is not present during the site visit and gives the evaluator permission to access their property to conduct the site visit independently
    • Property owner can join evaluator outside during the site visit but must observe social distancing and wear a face covering
  • What if my property does not meet all of the certification requirements?
If a site evaluator visits your property and finds that it does not meet all of the required criteria, we will let you know via email and provide detailed feedback on what elements of your property need improvement. You will then have up to 12 months to make the recommended changes and contact GEAS for a second site visit.

We encourage participants, wherever they are on their habitat improvement journey, to join the program to gain access to resources, continuing education opportunities, an online community forum, and more.

If you have reviewed the property criteria and do not feel your property is quite ready to meet all the requirements, please utilize the resources to guide you in enhancing the habitat quality of your outdoor space. We encourage participants to feel confident that their property meets the criteria before joining the program.
