Gulls in Winter
Autumn and winter bring the greatest variety of gull species, so it is the perfect time to study this challenging group. Gulls may seem intimidating at first, but if you know what to look for, most birds are not hard to identify. This class will help you familiarize yourself with all the regularly occurring species, highlighting differences in size, pattern, and shape. It’s time to let go of your fear and embrace your inner gull lover.
John Rakestraw has worked as a music teacher, farm laborer, and hardware salesman, all to support his birding habit. He was a naturalist in Kansas and Ohio before settling in Oregon, where he is now a freelance writer, bird guide, and author of Birding Oregon. He also leads classes and workshops. His favorite birding site outside Oregon is Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in central Kansas, one of the best places in the country to see migrant shorebirds.
