Bird Language: Learning to Read the Landscape Through Birds | Virtual Class

Birds are among the most alert beings in the natural world. Their calls, movements, and silences form a living communication network that reveals what’s happening in the landscape—predators passing through, food being discovered, disturbances unfolding, and even the presence of humans.

Join birder and nature educator Rey Snyder (they/them) for this immersive virtual class exploring the fundamentals of Bird Language. Through storytelling, visuals, sound examples, and guided observation practices, you’ll learn how to “tune in” to bird behavior and begin interpreting what birds are saying about their surroundings and ecological relationships.

While this class is presentation-based, it remains deeply experiential. Rey will teach you how to establish your own sit spot, observe bird behavior over time, and use simple mapping and journaling techniques to notice patterns and connections in your local environment—skills you can practice anywhere, from a city park to your backyard or window.

This class blends naturalist skills, mindfulness, and ecological awareness. Whether you’re new to birding or already spend time noticing birds, you’ll leave with practical tools to sharpen your observation skills, deepen your connection to place, and experience the living world with fresh attention.

You’ll learn about:

  • Interpreting bird vocalizations and behaviors

  • Recognizing patterns of disturbance, feeding, and movement

  • Using journaling and mapping to track observations over time

  • Developing awareness, patience, and intuitive observation skills

  • Understanding ecosystems through the lens of bird behavior

Come curious—Bird Language is an ancient human skill, and one that still has the power to reconnect us to the land, the wildlife around us, and our own instincts for noticing.

Registration fee:

  • Non-members - $30

  • Golden Eagle Audubon Society current members (as of date of registration) - $20
