Duck, Duck, Goose… and Swan! A Deep Dive Into the World of Waterfowl

With Rey Snyder

Wednesday, January 25, 7:00 - 8:30 pm MT on Zoom

Wade into the wondrous world of ducks, geese, and swans with local naturalist and educator Rey Snyder (they/them) in this engaging virtual class. Through vivid imagery, quirky facts, and short videos, you’ll explore the fascinating adaptations that make waterfowl such powerful swimmers, fliers, and survivors—from their waterproof feathers and air-filled bones to their complex breeding strategies and long migrations. You'll also get a glimpse into their deep evolutionary roots, stretching back to the time of the dinosaurs.

This class isn’t about memorizing field marks—it's about building appreciation for the beauty, resilience, and ecological importance of the Anatidae family. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of who and what waterfowl are, where they come from, how they thrive in aquatic environments, the challenges they face today, and how we can support their future through conservation, advocacy, and mindful birding. Perfect for curious nature lovers, bird enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys learning more about the wild world around us.

Rey (they/them) is an neurodivergent birder and nature educator who was born and raised in Oregon. They are a co-leader of Portland's Feminist Bird Club and serve on the board for the Oregon Birding Association. Rey leads trips and workshops for several organizations. They are committed to ethical birding, as well as to creating safe and inclusive spaces in the natural world for historically marginalized communities.

The class will be on Zoom. You will get the link after you register.  It will be recorded and made available to registrants afterwards. This class is open to everyone.

Registration fee:

  • Non-members - $30

  • Golden Eagle Audubon Society current members (as of date of registration) - $20
